The Story Behind Our Clinic
Years ago, my brother went in for an autism evaluation. He sat in the chair, answered the questions, and did his best to be polite.
The tester noted that he made "good eye contact" and concluded that he couldn't be autistic.
He was sent home without a diagnosis and without support.
It wasn't until years later that my brother told us the truth.
"I wasn't looking at his eyes. I was staring at his nose the whole time because I knew I was supposed to look at his face."
He wasn't neurotypical; he was masking and working overtime to fit a mold that didn't fit him. Unfortunately, the system used his effort against him.
Today, my brother is an adult. He is smart and capable, but he struggles to hold down a job, feels overwhelmed by driving, and battles anxiety and depression daily.
He needs accommodations to succeed as an adult, but to get those accommodations, he needs an official autism diagnosis.
When we tried to get him re-diagnosed, we hit a wall: the 12-month waitlist.
We realized that for adults in Utah, the door to help is effectively locked. Most people either wait a year for a university appointment, or give up entirely.
Watching someone you love struggle isn't just frustrating—it's unacceptable.
Why We Started Open Door Assessment
I decided to stop waiting for the system to change and created the solution instead.
Open Door Assessments isn't just a medical practice; it is a gateway for the "lost generation" of adults.
The adults who were too smart, too quiet, or too good at masking to get noticed as children.
We built this clinic on three simple promises:
1. We Understand Masking.
We hire psychologists who understand that adult autism doesn't look like childhood autism.
We use interview-based protocols (like the MIGDAS-2) that allow you to be yourself, rather than rigid tests that punish you for coping mechanisms. If you look at our nose, we won't hold it against you.
2. We Don't Do Waitlists.
When you are drowning in burnout, a year is an eternity.
We operate a lean, efficient telehealth model that allows us to deliver comprehensive adult autism diagnosis reports in 2 weeks, not 12 months.
3. We Meet You Where You Are.
Anxiety often makes leaving the house the hardest part of the day.
That’s why we are 100% remote. You can complete your entire autism diagnostic journey from your safe space, whether that's in Salt Lake City, St. George, or a rural town with no local doctors.
